TORONTO 36 at WINNIPEG 34

WINNIPEG -- Rookie Toronto quarterback Cleo Lemon ran in a touchdown as he notched his first CFL victory in a 36-34 win over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Friday night.

The victory snapped the Argos' nine-game losing streak dating back to last season.

After falling behind 16-0 in the second quarter, Winnipeg rallied for a 27-24 lead heading into the fourth quarter, but Toronto clawed back with 12 straight points.

Winnipeg receiver Terence Jeffers-Harris scored his second TD of the night with 16 seconds left. The Bombers tried to get the ball back but Alexis Serna's onside kick was recovered by the Argos, sealing their victory in front of 28,009 fans at Canad Inns Stadium.

Jim Barker notched his first win as Toronto head coach. Both teams have 1-1 records.

CALGARY 23 at HAMILTON 22

HAMILTON -- Rob Maver kicked a 23-yard field goal with 10 seconds to play Saturday as the Calgary Stampeders edged the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 23-22.

The Stampeders kicker was good on all three of his field goal attempts in front of 25,248 at Ivor Wynne Stadium.

The decisive kick came one minute after Hamilton's Sandro DeAngeleis had put his team ahead 22-20 with a 21-yard field goal. But Calgary responded with a 59-yard scoring drive, highlighted by a third-and-one conversion at midfield.

It was good enough to help Calgary improve to 2-0. Hamilton fell to 0-2.

Marcus Thigpen had another two touchdowns for the Ticats, including a 93-yard punt return on the first possession. Romby Bryant and Nik Lewis each scored for Calgary.

Stampeders QB Henry Burris threw both of those touchdown passes and had one fumble and one interception. Hamilton QB Kevin Glenn threw completed one TD pass.

DeAngelis made just two of his five field-goal attempts, hitting from 42 and 21 yards. He missed from 35 and 42 yards and had a 59-yarder blocked with two seconds remaining.

Special teams played a central role in the game. Thigpen scored on a 93-yard punt return on Hamilton's first possession of the game and Markeith Knowlton blocked and recovered a punt at the Calgary 25-yard line to set up a field goal. Lewis's 15-yard TD was set up by Deon Murphy's 105-yard return of a missed field goal.

SASKATCHEWAN 37 AT B.C. 18

VANCOUVER -- Quarterback Darian Durant softened up the B.C. Lions with a lot of pin-point passes, then the Saskatchewan Roughriders finished the job with some hard-nosed running in a 37-18 victory over the B.C. Lions in CFL play Saturday night.

Durant spread the ball around to some of his favourite receivers, connecting on long throws to Weston Dressler, Andy Fantuz and Chris Getzlaf in the first half. After building up a lead, the Riders (2-0) pounded the Lions with some grinding runs by Wes Cates.

It was tough night for the Lions in their season home opener. The defence couldn't make big stops and the offence struggled to convert on second-down plays. The Lions also hurt themselves with costly penalties.

Casey Printers started the game at quarterback for the Lions (1-1) but was hurt late in the first half when sacked by Saskatchewan's Brent Hawkins.

Printers limped off the field favouring his hip. He watched the second half standing in uniform on the sidelines while Travis Lulay finished the game.

Hawkins would add insult to injury when he picked up a Lulay fumble and ran 47 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Durant threw a four-yard touchdown pass to Prechae Rodriquez and scored himself on a 14-yard run. Cates scampered in from two yards out.

Luca Congi hit on field goals of 31, 28 and 32 yards.

Geroy Simon scored both Lions touchdowns. He grabbed a 32-yard pass from Printers in the first quarter, then connected with Lulay on a 92-yard play late in the game.

A sellout crowd of 25,528 came out on a warm summer night for the first regular-season game at Empire Field, the outdoor facility the Lions will use this season. With the Riders in town, dots of green jerseys could be seen in the sea of Lions' orange in the crowd.

MONTREAL 33 at EDMONTON 23

EDMONTON -- Jerald Brown's interception return for a touchdown was the difference as the Montreal Alouettes got their first win of the season Sunday, defeating the Edmonton Eskimos 33-23.

Trailing 23-18 after the three quarters, the Alouettes surged ahead by three points five minutes into the fourth. Brown bounced off of Kamau Peterson to intercept a pass from Edmonton quarterback Ricky Ray and return the ball 22 yards for the TD. Montreal QB Anthony Cavillo added a two-point conversion on a pass to Jamel Richardson for a 26-23 advantage.

On the next series Ray was picked off again, this time by Etienne Boulay at midfield.

A huge pass interference call on Edmonton's Jason Goss took the ball to the Edmonton six where Cavillo found Kerry Watkins to make it 33-23.

With 2:29 remaining, the Eskimos caught a late break, as Kenny Pettway blocked a punt. Edmonton got the ball on the Montreal 40 yard-line, but they couldn't do anything with the opportunity.

The Alouettes move into a three-way to for first place in the CFL's East Division with Toronto and Winnipeg at 1-1.

The Eskimos (0-2) have already dug themselves an early hole and now trail West-leading Calgary and Saskatchewan by four points.
