EDMONTON -- In the fourth quarter of Friday night's game at Commonwealth Stadium, Edmonton Eskimos linebacker JC Sherritt broke the CFL's single-season tackle record on Friday, passing Calvin Tiggle's record of 129 set in 1994.

He came into the game with 119 tackles, needing 11 to beat Tiggle's mark against the Stampeders.

"Anytime you get a record like that, you have to look at the guys around you on defence,'' Sherritt said. "None of that is possible without the other guys you play with. Individual records, they are sort of for your family and later on in life. When you play in this organization the only thing that counts is Grey Cups.

"It's an honour to get that record, but right now my eyes are on getting a ring.''

The 24-year-old Truckee, California native is in just his second season with the Eskimos, and has accomplished the feat despite missing one game due to a knee injury earlier this month.

Before joining the Esks, the five-foot-nine, 218-pound defender attended Eastern Washington, where he played 49 games over four seasons and averaged more than 11 tackles per game as a senior.

Great job by Sherritt! Not likely going to earn him an MOP nod but he has a good opportunity to claim the MODP award. A player who really broke a record!

MOP. Unfortunately, defense may never win it. But he set a tackles record with a game missed and is one of the league's interception leaders too. Probably going to go to one of the flashy, big name offensive players.. but there is little doubt in my mind that JC Sherritt was the best player in the CFL this year.

Congratulations to JC Sherritt on this great accomplishment in setting a new record in the CFL for tackles in one season.
And of course Jon Cornish is also to be congratulated in reaching a milestone rushing achievement in the CFL surpassing the previous record for a Canadian running back.
And both in the same game!

Cornish may have surpassed Kwong in rushing yards but it took him 2 and a half games longer! It can be called an achievement but IMO he has not broken the record. Sherritt has.
