Whitaker took over the Als starting job in the backfield in 2011, replacing incumbent Avon Cobourne who opted to sign with the Tiger-Cats during the off-season. Whitaker exceeded expectations in his first season as the team’s starter, leading the league in rushing with 1,381 yards and four touchdowns. He was also an asset through the air, hauling in 72 passes for 638 yards and five touchdowns. In 2012, Whitaker was primed to surpass his 2011 totals, but saw his season cut short in Week 12, as he suffered a year-ending torn ACL. Prior to succumbing to injury, Whitaker had registered 631 yards and four touchdowns, picking up 49 receptions for 516 yards and five TDs through the air.

In five years with the Als, McPherson threw 243 passes for 1,505 yards, 10 touchdowns and six interceptions. The Florida State product is also effective on the ground, as he’s registered 1,035 rushing yards and nine majors on 41 attempts. However, having never thrown more than 49 passes in a season, McPherson still remains to be a relatively unproven commodity.
